THE PRENATAL BOMBSHELL - Stehphanie Azri & Sherokee Ilse

“Finding out your unborn child has been diagnosed with a poor or fatal prenatal diagnosis is devastating news sure to reverberate through your family's life forever. The emotional aspects of such a pregnancy and the practical implications of an adverse diagnosis are difficult to navigate. The Prenatal Bombshell is a warm and understanding companion guide through the journey from diagnosis and beyond once you've decided to either continue or end your precious pregnancy. Issues such as managing the pregnancy, delivery, termination, creating memories, future babies, and the long term impact of such a traumatic experience are all covered in detail. The lived experiences of other women who have gone through this journey are also included to provide hope, support, and guidance through difficult times. The Prenatal Bombshell does not attempt to convince women to make a particular choice about their pregnancy. It supports them from their choice onwards in a way that is honest, informative, and reliable. Filled with stories and testimonies, this is a helpful book to have during, and well beyond, a poor prenatal diagnosis.”

Till We Meet Again - Memory Book

Tarlia is a Mother of three beautiful boys," two that walk next to me and one I carry in my heart. The idea for this book came to me as I recorded my pregnancy, birth and life of my rainbow baby. I realised both my boys had a book validating their lives, their birth, their existence, but Jayden didn't. I have worked hard to add anything to this book that I would smile over as I wrote about Jayden and I hope that many families too, will get even the smallest amount of joy in recording their babies important details as they welcome them into the world, at the same time they say good bye.

Till We Meet Again was designed with the motive of giving families a place to record all the precious memories that they may grasp hold of after they loose a baby to stillbirth. Unfortunately stillbirth leaves a family with not only a broken heart, but empty arms and they are left to face a future without a child they were so looking forward to watching grow. Any precious items they have that belonged to their baby are exactly that.....precious!

Stillbirth isnt just the loss of hopes and dreams, what if or should have beens it is the loss of a baby, their baby, their child.

The prospect of coming home to face a nursery that your baby will never use, clothes they will never wear or toys they will never play with is one of the most over whelming pains.

This book I hope will bring some comfort. Being able to document their birth, who they looked like, your feelings, keepsakes, handprints, footprints and more all in one place, may go such a long way to healing for so many.

It will be a heartbreaking, but precious reminder of everything about your baby."

Resource Special - A Terrible Thing Happened

Sherman Smith (a racoon) saw the most terrible thing happen. At first, he tried to forget about it, but soon something inside him started to bother him. He felt nervous for no reason. Sometimes his stomach hurt. He had bad dreams. And he started to feel angry and do mean things, which got him in trouble. Then he met someone who helped him talk about the terrible thing that he had tried to forget. Now Sherman is feeling much better. This gently told and warmly illustrated story is for children who have witnessed any kind of violent or traumatic episode, such as violence, crime, death, an accident or a natural disaster. Without specifying what ‘the terrible thing’ is exactly, the story explores the different ways it made Sherman feel, some of the problems that arose, and how some support helped him to begin to feel better. This is an invaluable book for children 4–8 years old to encourage communication about traumatic incidents.

Holding On & Letting Go - Facing Unexpected Diagnosis in Pregnancy

This is a book about love.

It contains stories from parents who have faced an unexpected diagnosis in pregnancy and have made a decision. The decision may have been to ‘Hold On’ and continue the pregnancy; it may have been to ‘Let Go’ and induce or terminate the pregnancy.

It contains contributions from health and caring professionals about making such a decision....

It has been compiled with the express goal of offering parents supplementary information from health professionals and, most importantly, the experiences of others who have found themselves in similar circumstances.

It is hoped that the experiences of others may provide information, answer some questions and ultimately assure parents that they are not totally alone in facing their heartbreaking situation of making a decision about their baby.

Their baby who is loved.

Beyond Words - Grieving When Your Child Has Died.

The death of a child is a heartfelt experience like no other.
It is a deep grief experience that goes beyond words.

The loss affects bereaved parents emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually and socially. It makes more demands on them than most others ever realise.

Many bereaved parents say that the only people who can ever genuinely begin to understand what it’s like for them are other bereaved parents. Hearing from others who have ‘been there’ can make all the difference. For this reason, Beyond Words is a handbook that features the honest words, perspectives and suggestions of many bereaved parents. It also offers useful information about managing grief, support options and ideas that may be helpful on the grief journey.

It is comforting, encouraging, informative and practical.

It will also provide understanding and insights to professionals and others seeking to effectively support and companion the bereaved.

Change For Our Children - pepi-pod

GOOD NEWS.... The infant mortality rate in New Zealand has been declining since 2010...

Like its sister, the wahakura, the pepi-pod enables babies to be close to a parent and safe when settling for sleep, wherever that may be. The pepi-pod is the safe space but parents must also provide the safe care. This means 'face-up, face clear, smokefree' conditions every time their baby sleeps.

Close and safe

What is a pepi-pod?

Pepi means baby in Maori and pod is symbolic of protection in nature. A pepi-pod is a general purpose storage box that converts to a baby sized bed with the addition of an attractive cover, fitting mattress and bedding. It offers babies a safe space when tehy sleep in or on an adult be, on a couch, in a makeshift setting or away from home. These are settings with a higher risk of suffocation.

Who are they for?

Pepi-pods are not for all babies. They are a public health solution to the increased risk of sudden infant death for babies with a weakened drive to breathe due to: smoking in pregnancy, being premature, a low birth weight, formula fed or for some other reason.

What is the package?

We are currently providing a complete package of: pod, mattress, cover, 2 base sheets, 2 wrap around 'settling' sheets, a double layer merino blanket and a thorough safety briefing and education programme for distributors.

A whole community approach

It needs to be a low cost package to compete as a health funded strategy. To achieve this we have support from across the community. People have sewn covers and sheet sets, companies have provided goods or services at subsidised prices, and health funders have accepted proposals from committed professionals and managers. Concerned professionals are identifying vulnerable babies in need of a pepi-pod, credentialed distributors are briefing parents at pick-up and pepi-pod recipients are helping to spread the education within their networks. This is community at its best!

Tear Soup - A Recipe For Healing After Loss

Tear Soup recognizes and reinforces the fact that every member of the family from the youngest to the oldest will grieve in their own way.  Taking their own time and in doing so, find those things which  help them best.  Essentially, we each make our own batch of Tear Soup when we grieve the loss of someone we love or for any major change in our lives.  We make Tear Soup when we move far away from the ones we love, or lose our job.

Tear Soup is Universal.  No one is left out.  Because we never learn exactly who or what Grandy lost and why she is making Tear Soup, the story remains open to countless situations of bereavement and family members.  By emphasizing the individual process of bereavement by making soup, Grandy's brings a warm and comfortable feeling to an otherwise difficult subject matter for many individuals.

Ciara's Gift: Grief Edged with Gold By Una Glennon

In 1997, the murder of her daughter Ciara left a mother and her family shattered by grief. Ciara’s Gift, expressed with honesty and insight, is the story of the mother’s often lonely search for meaning after this cruel and devastating event. In a series of deeply moving and thought-provoking memories and reflections, Una Glennon weaves us through the shadowland of grief to eventually emerge with a deeper understanding and acceptance of suffering and the fragility of life. It is the book she would never have wished to write but became compelled to write, as a gift from her daughter to every parent who has experienced the death of a child.

Baby Sam - A Book by Liz Tamblyn

Liz Tamblyn, a Sands Bay of Plenty member, has written and illustrated a beautiful book for children on stillbirth and the loss of a sibling - entitled Baby Sam.

The book was co-written with her son Jack, who was four at the time of her son's death.

Liz wrote the book because there were very few such books at the time Sam died, especially books that were written from a sibling's perspective.

Duck, Death and the Tulip by Wolf Erlbruch

In a strangely heart-warming story, a duck strikes up an unlikely friendship with Death.

“Who are you? Why are you creeping along behind me?”
“Good. You’ve finally noticed me,” said Death.
“I am Death.”
Duck was scared stiff. You could hardly blame her for that.

Death, Duck and the Tulip is the much anticipated translation of Wolf Erlbruch’s latest masterpiece.

Death, Duck and the Tulip will intrigue, haunt and enchant , children, teenagers and adults.

Simple, unusual, warm and witty — a picture book version of The Book Thief. This book deals with a difficult subject in a way that is elegant, straightforward, and thought-provoking.
